£302m in FE college repair allocations announced

Dilapidated buildings at further education colleges across England will be refurbished under £302m of funding allocations unveiled today.

The money, revealed in October’s Budget, is the first Condition Improvement Fund allocation for colleges since 2022.

It will be distributed to institutions across England, with more than 250 colleges set to benefit.

The funding will support maintenance and upgrades to estates, including roof repairs, window replacements and general modernisation works.

The government has given colleges discretion over how to spend their allocations, aiming to allow flexibility in addressing estate issues.

The Department for Education said the funding would help boost economic growth by improving facilities for skills training.

Capital City College in London received the largest single allocation, at more than £7.3m, according to a full list published alongside the announcement (see below).

Skills minister Jacqui Smith said: “Further education colleges are at the heart of our mission to grow the economy. But the college estate we inherited is simply not fit for purpose.”

Projects supported through the programme will be monitored to ensure works are completed efficiently and in line with sustainability goals, the government said.

The announcement follows a separate £100m commitment to establish 10 new Technical Excellence Colleges in each English region by 2029.
