Northern Ireland Electricity Networks Limited (NIEN) has launched procurement for a £434.4m framework to deliver new transmission substations.
The eight-year multi-party framework, which could be extended to 2034, is split into two lots.
Lot 1 covers larger substations ranging from 110 to 400kV with project values between £20m and £100m. Lot 2 covers medium-scale works at 33 to 275kV, with values from £2m to £20m.
The programme, due to begin in April 2026, will include turnkey delivery of electrical, mechanical, civils and enabling works.
Local overhead lines and cabling within the curtilage of sites are also included.
NIEN said both lots could be procured through either Design and Build or Engineering, Procurement and Construction models.
It intends for transformers, switchgear and other equipment to be within the contractors’ scope, although it reserves the right to provide such equipment where already procured.
The total value of the framework, excluding VAT, is £362m.
Including VAT, this rises to £434.4m. NIEN intends to appoint up to six contractors per lot, with subsequent awards made either directly or via mini-competition.
Initial projects expected to be awarded under the framework include schemes at Ballylumford (Lot 1) and Tureagh (Lot 2).
Requests to participate must be submitted via NIEN’s Bravo e-sourcing portal by 16 May 2025. An award is expected by February 2026.
