Volkswagen is recalling an estimated 99,000 units of 2021-2024 mode year ID.4 SUVs due to a potential door malfunction.
Dealers will inspect and replace the door handles as necessary, free of charge.
Reason for the Recall
The doors on the electric SUV may open unexpectedly while driving, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported. The affected vehicles may have been built with door handles that do not meet the factory specifications for protection against water ingress.
According to the recall report, water ingress into the printed circuit board can lead to malfunctions, causing an “open command” to the door lock.
Although Volkswagen has not reported any incidents or accidents due to the malfunction, an open door on a moving vehicle puts occupants at risk of injury. It can also cause damage to objects and people who may be outside of the car, resulting in a higher crash risk.
At no cost to customers, dealers will inspect each door handle and replace it with improved parts if necessary. A vehicle software update will also be performed to update the door handle parameters. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Nov. 1, 2024.
